Tracy Lord, of the Philadelphia Lords, is an uptight and spoiled daughter of the privileged. Divorced from C.J. Dexter Haven, she is engaged to a successful young snob. A gossip weekly sends a reporter and a camera woman incognito to report on the wedding festivities. They infiltrate the wedding weekend with the help of Tracy's brother who hopes to divert attention away from their philandering father. Tracy finds herself growing interested in Connor, the fascinating reporter, while little sister Dinah does her best to bring Dexter back into the fold. After a tipsy Tracy and a surprised Conner enjoy a dip in the pool, they run into Dexter and her shocked finance, George. The following morning her intended agrees to forgive her, but his smug attitude enrages Tracy and she breaks off the engagement. Connor offers to marry her, but she turns him down and remarries Dexter, to the satisfaction of everyone.
Playwright Phillip Barry wrote the script specifically for Katharine Hepburn and the show ran for 415 performances before going on tour for another 250 performances. The hit film hit also starred Hepburn as Tracy Lord, with Cary Grant as C.J. Dexter Haven, and Jimmy Stewart as Mike Connor. It was later made into a musical - High Society, starring Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, & Frank Sinatra. |
