Annapolis 300th Anniversary

Colonial Players will take part in the City-wide celebration of the 300th Anniversary of the granting of the City’s charter by Queen Anne in 1708.  On June 6th, 7th, and 8th, CP will present Susanna Centlivre’s comedy of manners, The Busie Body, first presented in England in 1709.

This witty frolic is about the wooing of two comely young ladies by gentlemen not chosen by their parents and guardians. In fact the adults have designs of their own for the ladies’ marriages, arranged as they often were for financial gain.  The script is witty and engaging and interesting too for its female author, speaking out for women’s rights to marry for love at a time when women had few rights at all - certainly none to vote nor own property and rarely to make the matches they pleased.

The play will be presented in period costume at the Colonial Players theater at 108 East Street in historic Annapolis.
