Featuring a cast of seven women and one man, Simon’s faintly
autobiographical comedy deals with a writer in the throes of domestic
upheaval. Laced with Simon’s wit, the comedy nevertheless probes into the
difficulties of being happy as Jake ruminates and argues with the important
women in his life. As he thinks of them and conjures them up in his
imagination, they appear, sometimes speaking his lines, sometimes
interjecting their own. The result is an evening of fun and wistful insights
into the tricky business of loving.
The Colonial Players production has been directed by Beverly
van Joolen and features Jim Murphy as Jake. Carol Cohen plays his sister
Karen; Dianne Hood, his therapist; Zarah Roberts, his current wife Maggie
and Ally Raber, his deceased wife Julie. In addition, he is visited by his
daughter Molly, played by Bronwyn van Joolen at age 11 and Shannon Benil at
age 21. Sometimes mixed into all the imaginary conversation is the real
talk of Jake’s current girlfriend Sheila, played by Katie Wheeler.
